Competence in energy systems to support the energy transition

Our services include consulting, technical and economic studies and analyses, customised as well as standardised software solutions, workshops and reports. Our systems engineering expertise combined with our experience enables us to work on interdisciplinary issues in the fields of engineering (especially electrical, gas and power engineering) and economics as well as information technology and law.

The dynamic evolution of the regulatory framework brings new challenges to industry and regulatory authorities . We are pleased to meet this challenge and develop new perspectives in cooperation with our clients.

The following explains our core fields of competence and provides some examples of our services offered over the past years.

System analysis

System analysis

Among all market participants, the dynamically changing regulatory conditions and uncertainties regarding the future development of the energy system are leading to an increasing demand for comprehensive system analyses. We support our clients in analyzing even complex interactions within the energy system by simulating events in energy markets and grids, considering mutual influencing factors such as congestion management, network expansion, and the development of renewable energy sources. Project example: Long-term scenarios. Network expansion and development of renewables Project example: Long-term scenarios

Market design

Market design

Decent market design aims to create market rules that incentivize participants to unlock decentralizd knowledge and behave in ways that efficiently achieve overarching goals. This is particularly important in energy markets where political influence is high and grids are natural monopolies. We support market participants, policy makers, and regulatory authorities in evaluating and optimizing market rules for all segments of the energy market, from capacity markets to coupled electricity markets to balancing and accounting of energy.

Example 1 Example 2
Regulation

Regulation

The regulation of the energy sector requires all stakeholders to have a thorough understanding of the respective objectives and assessment methods as well as the relevant processes and organizations. We support NRAs as well as regulated companies and their industry associations in development and critical discussion of regulatory principles and the models and techniques used to implement them, in analysis of fundamental issues as well as in specific cases.

Example 1 Example 2
Asset Management

Asset Management

Well-informed decisions concerning the management of network assets require a comprehensive understanding of how measures and options affect network costs and quality of supply. We develop and apply models that allow for the simulation and systematic investigation of cause-and-effect relations. On this basis we support network operators in asset management for the electricity, gas, water, and district heating sectors, including the analysis of network supply quality (e.g., reliability), in preparing decisions on network design, or in making specific individual decisions.

Example 1 Example 2
Network expansion planning

Network expansion planning

The energy transition requires significant expansion and restructuring of transmission and distribution networks. We support network operators in this process by, among others, deriving spatially detailed scenarios for network requirements in all sectors, developing practical planning and operational principles, and designing and evaluating target network variants. In doing so, we consider various conditions such as the potential for using flexibility, current technological developments, municipal heat planning requirements, and the availability of technical and human resources.

Example 1 Example 2
Security of Supply

Security of Supply

Guaranteeing security of supply is becoming an increasingly difficult and multi-faceted task due to the constraints of a highly politically influenced and rapidly changing energy system. We support decision-makers by providing analyses and studies on the status quo and expected development of security of supply. We advise on guidelines and processes which allow an optimal coordination of all market players and ensure the economically efficient level of security of supply. Project example: monitoring of security of supply
